Many people think Aladdin comes from the ancient Arabic Thousand and One Nights, but the story does not appear in the early Arabic manuscripts. Scholars call it an orphan tale. In the spring of 1709, a young man from Aleppo in Syria, Hanna Diyab, came to Paris and told the story to the French scholar Antoine Galland, who was translating the Nights. The next year, in 1710, Galland included it in his French edition, and Aladdin became famous around the world.
英语里的"灯神"叫 genie,这个词是加朗用法语的 génie 来翻译阿拉伯语里的"镇尼"(jinn)时传开的。故事里还有个有趣的地方:加朗的版本开头写的是"在中国的一座城市里",可故事里的人物都叫苏丹、穿长袍,过的完全是中东式的生活。公主的名字白德尔·布杜尔,在阿拉伯语里的意思是"满月中的满月",是古时候形容美丽的说法。
The English word genie spread when Galland used the French word génie to translate the Arabic jinn. There is another curious detail: Galland's version begins in a city in China, yet the characters have a Sultan, wear robes and live a Middle Eastern life. The princess's name, Badroulbadour, means full moon of full moons in Arabic, an old way of describing beauty.
