The story comes from The Secret History of the Mongols, one of the earliest histories written by Mongols in their own language. Scholars disagree about when it was finished, and a common view is around the year 1228. The Mongolian original has been lost. What we read today is a version from the early Ming dynasty, in which Chinese characters were used to write down the sound of the Mongolian words, with a Chinese translation added, and it is called the Yuan Chao Mi Shi. Alan Gua is described in the book as a distant ancestor of Genghis Khan, and her youngest son Bodonchar is named as the forefather of the Borjigin family to which Genghis Khan belonged.
Stories that teach unity with arrows are told across Eurasia. In the Book of Wei, written by Wei Shou around the years 551 to 554, the king Ahe of the Tuyuhun people also asks his sons to break arrows before he dies, and ends with the saying that a single arrow breaks easily but many together are hard to break. In a work credited to Plutarch, the Scythian king Scilurus teaches his eighty sons with a bundle of javelins, and Aesop has a fable called The Old Man and His Sons.
