戈尔迪之结的故事发生在公元前333年，地点是小亚细亚的弗里吉亚古城戈尔迪乌姆，在今天的土耳其境内。古希腊史学家阿里安的《亚历山大远征记》和普鲁塔克的《亚历山大传》都记载了这件事，不过对亚历山大用什么办法解开绳结，古书的说法并不一致。

The story of the Gordian Knot took place in 333 BC at Gordium, the old capital of Phrygia in Asia Minor, in present-day Turkey. It is recorded by the Greek historian Arrian in The Campaigns of Alexander and by Plutarch in his Life of Alexander, but the ancient writers do not agree on exactly how Alexander undid the knot.

「戈尔迪之结」后来成了英语里的常用说法，用来比喻非常棘手、难以解开的难题。戈尔迪乌姆古城遗址在2023年被列入联合国世界文化遗产，考古学家在那里发掘出了古代弗里吉亚国王的大型墓丘。

The Gordian Knot later became a common expression in English for a very tricky problem that seems impossible to solve. The site of Gordium became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2023, and archaeologists have excavated great burial mounds of the ancient Phrygian kings there.
