The story of Amaterasu is first recorded in the oldest surviving histories of Japan, the Kojiki of 712 and the Nihon Shoki of 720. She is the sun goddess of Japanese mythology, and the Ise Grand Shrine in Mie Prefecture is dedicated to her; it is regarded as the most important shrine in Japan.

故事里众神挂在洞口的镜子叫「八咫镜」，它和草薙剑、八尺琼勾玉合称日本的「三种神器」。宫崎县高千穗有一座天岩户神社，相传就是天照大神藏身的山洞所在地，至今仍有许多人前去参观。

The mirror the gods hang at the mouth of the cave is called Yata no Kagami. Together with the sword Kusanagi and the jewel Yasakani no Magatama, it forms the Three Sacred Treasures of Japan. At Takachiho in Miyazaki Prefecture stands Amano Iwato Shrine, said to mark the cave where Amaterasu hid, and many people still visit it today.
