The ancient Egyptians wrote this judgement into the Book of the Dead, in the text known as Spell 125. The Papyrus of Hunefer in the British Museum, painted around 1275 BC, shows the jackal headed god Anubis adjusting the scales: on one side lies the heart of the dead person, on the other the feather of Maat, goddess of truth, while Thoth, god of wisdom, records the result with his pen. The Book of the Dead was used in Egypt for about fifteen hundred years, from around 1550 BC until the first century BC.
