阿基米德约生于公元前287年，是西西里岛叙拉古城人。皇冠的故事最早见于约两百年后古罗马建筑师维特鲁威的《建筑十书》，书里说阿基米德想出办法后，兴奋地从浴室跑出来，边跑边喊「尤里卡」，意思是「我找到了」。

Archimedes was born around 287 BC in the city of Syracuse on Sicily. The story of the crown first appears about two hundred years later in On Architecture by the Roman architect Vitruvius, which says that when Archimedes worked out the answer, he ran out of the bath shouting Eureka, which means I have found it.

1906年，丹麦学者海伯格在一本中世纪祈祷书的羊皮纸下面，发现了被刮掉的阿基米德著作，其中有失传已久的《方法论》。这本「重写本」后来借助特殊光谱和X射线等技术，才被完整读出。今天数学界最高奖之一的菲尔兹奖，奖章上刻的就是阿基米德的头像。

In 1906, the Danish scholar Johan Heiberg discovered works by Archimedes that had been scraped off and written over by a medieval prayer book, including the long lost Method. This palimpsest was later read in full with the help of special imaging and X rays. Today the Fields Medal, one of the highest prizes in mathematics, bears a portrait of Archimedes.
