Baba Yaga is the most famous forest witch of Slavic folk tales. She lives in a little wooden hut that stands on chicken legs and can turn around. When she goes out, she rides in a great wooden mortar, steering with a pestle and sweeping away her tracks with a broom. Sometimes she is frightening, and sometimes she helps people who are brave and kind.

This story is based on the Russian folk tale Vasilisa the Beautiful, collected by the folklorist Alexander Afanasyev in his Russian Folk Tales, published between 1855 and 1863. In 1899 the artist Ivan Bilibin painted a famous series of illustrations for it, and his hut on chicken legs is still the classic image of Baba Yaga today.
