芭蕉扇的故事出自《西游记》第五十九回到第六十一回，在原书里叫「三调芭蕉扇」，三回的回目分别是《孙行者一调芭蕉扇》《孙行者二调芭蕉扇》《孙行者三调芭蕉扇》。铁扇公主在书里又叫罗刹女，她是牛魔王的妻子、红孩儿的母亲。

The story of the palm leaf fan comes from chapters fifty nine to sixty one of Journey to the West, where it is called Three Attempts at the Palm Leaf Fan; the three chapter titles describe the first, second and third attempts by the Monkey King. Princess Iron Fan is also called the Rakshasa Woman in the book; she is the wife of the Bull Demon King and the mother of Red Boy.

火焰山是一座真实存在的山，就在新疆吐鲁番盆地。它由红色砂岩构成，在烈日下像燃烧的火焰一样，夏天地表温度可以超过70摄氏度，是中国最热的地方之一。唐代玄奘西行取经时，正是经过这一带前往西域。

The Flaming Mountains are real, in the Turpan Basin in Xinjiang. They are made of red sandstone that looks like blazing flames under the hot sun, and in summer the ground temperature can rise above 70 degrees Celsius, making it one of the hottest places in China. When the real monk Xuanzang travelled west in the Tang dynasty, he passed through this very region.
