The story we know as Borrowing Arrows with Straw Boats — Zhuge Liang tricking Cao Cao into giving him arrows on a foggy day — actually comes from Chapter 46 of the Ming-dynasty novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms by Luo Guanzhong, a brilliant piece of literary fiction rather than real history. Its historical inspiration involved someone else entirely: according to the Records of the Three Kingdoms, during the Battle of Ruxu in 213 CE, it was Sun Quan whose scouting boat was struck by a barrage of enemy arrows on one side; he quickly ordered the boat turned around so arrows would land evenly on both sides, allowing it to return safely — Zhuge Liang had nothing to do with it.
