A classic account of Cangjie appears in the preface of the Shuowen Jiezi by Xu Shen of the Eastern Han: Cangjie, the historian of the Yellow Emperor, saw the footprints of birds and beasts, realised that their patterns could be told apart, and began to create writing. Before that, people kept records by tying knots in cords. The Book of Changes says that in high antiquity people governed by knotted cords, and later sages replaced them with written signs.
The Huainanzi says that when Cangjie created writing, grain rained from the sky and ghosts wept at night, showing how earth shaking ancient people thought the invention of writing was. The earliest systematic Chinese writing we can see today is the oracle bone script, first recognised in 1899 by the scholar Wang Yirong, and it is more than three thousand years old.
