很久以前，黄帝手下有一位史官，名叫仓颉，专门负责记录部落里发生的大事小情。那时候还没有文字，人们只能用在绳子上打结的办法来记事——大事打一个大结，小事打一个小结。

Long ago, the Yellow Emperor had an official named Cangjie, whose job was to record everything important happening in the tribe. Back then, there was no writing yet, so people could only tie knots in ropes to keep records — a big knot for a big event, a small knot for a small one.

可是部落里的事情越来越多，光靠打绳结根本记不过来，仓颉常常为此发愁。有一天，他跟着猎人上山，看见猎人只看地上的脚印，就能准确说出这是什么动物走过——仓颉心里忽然冒出了一个念头。

But as the tribe grew, there were simply too many things happening to keep track of with knots alone, and Cangjie often worried about this. One day, he followed a hunter up the mountain and saw the hunter identify which animal had passed just by looking at its footprints — an idea suddenly sparked in Cangjie's mind.
