"曹冲称象"的故事记载于西晋史学家陈寿所著的《三国志》，讲的是曹操之子曹冲五六岁时的一段真实往事。有一次孙权送给曹操一头大象，曹操想知道它的重量，却苦于当时没有能称这么重物体的秤。年幼的曹冲想出一个巧妙的办法：把大象牵上船，在船身刻下水面的痕迹，再往船上装石头，直到水痕齐平，最后只需称出这些石头的重量，就能算出大象有多重。

The story of Cao Chong Weighs an Elephant is recorded in the Records of the Three Kingdoms, a historical text written by the Western Jin scholar Chen Shou. It tells a true episode from the childhood of Cao Chong, son of the warlord Cao Cao, when he was only five or six years old. When Sun Quan sent Cao Cao an elephant as a gift, Cao Cao wanted to know its weight, but no scale of that era could weigh something so massive. Young Cao Chong came up with a clever solution: load the elephant onto a boat, mark the waterline on the hull, then load stones onto the boat until the waterline matched again — so that weighing the stones alone would reveal the elephant's true weight.
