嫦娥原名「恒娥」，也写作「姮娥」，汉代为了避汉文帝刘恒的名讳，才改称「嫦娥」。1993年湖北江陵王家台出土的秦代竹简《归藏》里，已经有她偷吃不死药奔月的记载；西汉的《淮南子·览冥训》写道：「羿请不死之药于西王母，姮娥窃以奔月。」2004年，中国启动探月工程，就以「嫦娥」为它命名。

Chang E was originally called Heng E. In the Han dynasty her name was changed to Chang E to avoid using the personal name of Emperor Wen, whose given name was Heng. Bamboo slips of the Guizang, a Qin dynasty text excavated at Wangjiatai in Jiangling, Hubei, in 1993, already record her taking the elixir of immortality and flying to the moon. The Western Han book Huainanzi says that Yi asked the Queen Mother of the West for the elixir, and Heng E stole it and fled to the moon. In 2004, China named its lunar exploration programme after her: the Chang E Project.
