Cu Chulainn is the most famous hero of the Ulster Cycle of Irish legend, and his deeds are told above all in the epic The Cattle Raid of Cooley. The oldest version of this epic survives in the Book of the Dun Cow, whose main part was written before about 1106. It is the oldest surviving manuscript in the Irish language and is kept today at the Royal Irish Academy in Dublin.

Ulster lies in the north of the island of Ireland, and the area around Dundalk has long been called the home of Cu Chulainn. In the General Post Office in Dublin stands the bronze statue The Dying Cu Chulainn by the sculptor Oliver Sheppard, one of the most famous sculptures in Ireland.
