The earliest record of the Door Gods Shenshu and Yulu is in the chapter Ding Gui of Lunheng, by the Eastern Han thinker Wang Chong (27–about 97). Wang Chong said the passage came from the Classic of Mountains and Seas, but it can no longer be found in the version handed down today. At the end of the Eastern Han, Ying Shao also wrote about the two brothers in the chapter Si Dian of Fengsu Tongyi.
In ancient times, people hung peach wood boards on their doors at New Year. These were called taofu. The History of Song records that Meng Chang, ruler of Later Shu in the Five Dynasties period, wrote a pair of lucky lines on a taofu himself, which is often seen as an early spring couplet. Wang Anshi (1021–1086) of the Northern Song also wrote in his poem New Year Day: always taking down the old taofu and putting up the new.
