The story of dotting the eyes of the dragon comes from Records of Famous Painters of All Dynasties, written by Zhang Yanyuan of the Tang dynasty around the year 847, the first systematic history of painting in China. It records that Zhang Sengyou painted four dragons on a wall of the Anle Temple in Jinling but left out their eyes, always saying that if he dotted them, the dragons would fly away. When people kept asking, he dotted the eyes; in a moment thunder and lightning broke the wall, the dragons with eyes flew off on the clouds, and those without eyes remained.
Zhang Sengyou was a great painter of the Liang dynasty in the Southern Dynasties period, and under Emperor Wu of Liang he painted murals for many Buddhist temples in Jinling. Together with Gu Kaizhi of the Eastern Jin and Lu Tanwei of the Liu Song dynasty, he is known as one of the Three Great Masters of the Six Dynasties. Jinling in the story is today Nanjing in Jiangsu Province, which was the capital of several southern dynasties.
