East of the Sun and West of the Moon is a Norwegian folktale; in Norwegian it is called Østenfor sol og vestenfor måne. In the 1840s, two friends, Peter Christen Asbjørnsen and Jørgen Moe, travelled the Norwegian countryside writing down the stories ordinary people told, and gathered them into the Norwegian Folktales collection, which includes this one. In 1859 the English scholar George Webbe Dasent translated it in Popular Tales from the Norse, and in 1889 Andrew Lang chose it for The Blue Fairy Book.

Folklorists classify it as type ATU 425A, part of a large family of tales called The Search for the Lost Husband. It has a very old relative: in the second century AD, the Roman writer Apuleius told the tale of Cupid and Psyche in The Golden Ass, in which Psyche loses her husband after secretly lighting a lamp to look at him, and must set out on a long search. In 1914 the Danish artist Kay Nielsen illustrated a book of these Norwegian tales titled East of the Sun and West of the Moon, which is still seen as a classic of picture-book art.
