El Cid was a real historical figure, full name Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar, whose story was written into Spains oldest epic poem, El Cantar de Mio Cid. To this day, his trusted sword, Tizona, is preserved in Burgos, Spain, and metallurgical analysis has confirmed it truly dates back to the 11th century.
