The name Etana appears in the famous Sumerian King List, which calls him the shepherd who ascended to heaven, an early king of the city of Kish after the great flood. His story was written in Akkadian on clay tablets, and copies survive from the Old Babylonian and Middle Assyrian periods, as well as a standard version found at Nineveh.

Cylinder seals from Mesopotamia more than four thousand years old show a man riding on the back of an eagle as it flies into the sky, and many scholars believe this is Etana. It may be one of the earliest images of human flight ever made.
