十个太阳的说法见于《山海经》：「羲和者，帝俊之妻，生十日」，十个太阳住在东方汤谷的扶桑树上，「九日居下枝，一日居上枝」，轮流出来照耀大地。后羿射日的情节，则记载在西汉的《淮南子·本经训》里：尧的时候「十日并出，焦禾稼，杀草木」，尧便派羿「上射十日」。

The idea of ten suns appears in the Classic of Mountains and Seas: Xihe, the wife of Dijun, gave birth to ten suns. They lived in a giant Fusang tree at the Valley of Hot Springs in the east, nine resting on the lower branches and one on the top branch, taking turns to light the world. The story of Hou Yi shooting the suns is recorded in the Huainanzi of the Western Han: in the time of Yao, ten suns rose together, scorching the crops and killing the plants, so Yao sent Yi to shoot the ten suns.

1986年，四川广汉三星堆遗址出土了一棵残高约3.96米的青铜神树，树分三层，枝头上站着九只神鸟。不少学者认为，它表现的正是古人心中太阳栖息的扶桑树，因为在古代传说里，太阳是由神鸟背着在天上运行的。这棵三千多年前的青铜神树，如今收藏在三星堆博物馆。

In 1986, a bronze sacred tree about 3.96 metres tall was unearthed at the Sanxingdui site in Guanghan, Sichuan. It has three tiers of branches with nine sacred birds perched on them. Many scholars believe it shows the Fusang tree where the suns rested, because in ancient legend the suns were carried across the sky by sacred birds. This bronze tree, more than three thousand years old, is now kept in the Sanxingdui Museum.
