Anansi's stories come from the Akan people of Ghana in West Africa, where the spider Anansi is recognized as the “god of stories.” These tales remain vividly alive today — in the Akan language, all folk tales are collectively called “Anansesem” (Anansi's stories), a name that traveled with the transatlantic trade all the way to Jamaica, Haiti, and other parts of the Caribbean.

Legend says all the world's stories were once locked away in the sky by the god Nyame. The spider Anansi wanted to buy them and share them with the world — but Nyame set a price that seemed nearly impossible: four of the most dangerous creatures alive.
