This story comes from the San people of southern Africa. In the 1870s, the German linguist Wilhelm Bleek (1827–1875) and his sister-in-law Lucy Lloyd (1834–1914) invited San storytellers in Cape Town to tell their stories and wrote them down word by word. This story was heard by the storyteller Kabbo from his mother and recorded in 1873.
In 1911, Lloyd published these records as Specimens of Bushman Folklore, a book of 87 stories with the original San words printed side by side with the English translation. No one speaks the language of these stories anymore, which makes the book a precious record.
