Indra is the most important god in the Rigveda, the oldest scripture of India. About a quarter of the hymns in this collection, composed roughly between 1500 and 1000 BC, are addressed to him, and he wields the thunderbolt vajra and rules over thunder and rain. When Buddhism came to China, he appeared in many Buddhist scriptures and cave murals under the name Dishitian. The parable of the parade of ants in this story comes from a later text, the Brahmavaivarta Purana, and the German scholar Heinrich Zimmer retold it in his 1946 book Myths and Symbols in Indian Art and Civilization, making it widely known in the West.
