Jack and the Beanstalk is one of the most famous English folktales. The earliest known printed version appeared in 1734 in the English story collection Round About Our Coal-Fire, under the title "The Story of Jack Spriggins and the Enchanted Bean." In 1807, publisher Benjamin Tabart released a version with added moral lessons; in 1890, folklorist Joseph Jacobs included it in English Fairy Tales. Jacobs's version is thought to be closer to how the tale was told aloud, and it is the one most people know today.
故事里的"杰克"其实不是某一个特定的人。在英国民间故事里，"杰克"是一个常见的平民小英雄的名字：他往往出身贫寒、看上去有点傻，却总能凭着胆量和机灵闯过难关，比如另一个有名的故事《巨人杀手杰克》。后来，这些"杰克故事"还跟着移民漂洋过海，在美国阿巴拉契亚山区流传开来，直到今天还有人在讲。
The "Jack" in this story is not one particular person. In English folktales, Jack is a common name for an everyday young hero — often poor and a bit foolish-looking, yet always getting through trouble with courage and quick wits, as in another famous tale, Jack the Giant Killer. Later, these "Jack tales" crossed the ocean with settlers and took root in the Appalachian Mountains of America, where people still tell them today.
