姜子牙封神的故事出自明代小说《封神演义》，这部书一般认为是明代许仲琳所作，也有学者认为作者是陆西星。小说的第九十九回叫《姜子牙归国封神》，按照一般的说法，姜子牙在封神台上一共册封了三百六十五位正神。

The story of Jiang Ziya at the Terrace of Gods comes from the Ming dynasty novel Investiture of the Gods, usually attributed to Xu Zhonglin, although some scholars believe the author was Lu Xixing. Chapter ninety nine is titled Jiang Ziya Returns and Confers the Gods, and according to the usual account, he appointed three hundred and sixty five gods on the terrace.

《封神演义》里的许多神仙，后来真的走进了民间信仰和日常生活，比如托塔天王李靖、哪吒、杨戬，还有被封为财神的赵公明。春节贴门神、拜财神的习俗里，都能看到这部小说的影子。

Many of the gods in Investiture of the Gods later became part of folk belief and daily life, such as the Pagoda Bearing Heavenly King Li Jing, Nezha, Yang Jian, and Zhao Gongming, who was made a god of wealth. You can still see traces of this novel in Spring Festival customs such as putting up door gods and praying to the god of wealth.
