The story of John Henry first spread around 1870 among the railroad workers building the Big Bend Tunnel in West Virginia. His legend was set to music in the classic American folk ballad, which still exists in dozens of versions today, one of the most celebrated folk heroes in African American labor history.

Legend says a steam drill arrived at a railroad camp, claiming to do the work of a dozen men. John Henry, the camps mightiest steel driver, refused to accept this, and challenged the machine to a race to prove whose strength was greater.
