John Chapman was a real historical figure, born in 1774, who spent nearly fifty years walking through Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, and beyond, planting apple trees along the way. He was also a vegetarian who respected Native American culture, and remains a beloved figure in American childrens literature to this day.
