In Cambodia, the clever rabbit has a famous name, Sophea Tonsay, which means Judge Rabbit. In 1878, the French scholar Etienne Aymonier (1844–1929) published Khmer Texts in Saigon, which included the rhymed Book of Judge Rabbit. He noted that the seals of Cambodian judges at that time showed a rabbit.
In the 1930s, the French scholar Midan translated many Judge Rabbit stories into French and published them in the bulletin of the Society for Indochinese Studies. In 1943, Monod published a book of Khmer tales. In these stories, the rabbit often speaks up for people and animals who have been treated unfairly, much like the clever fox in European tales.
