凿壁偷光的故事见于《西京杂记》：「匡衡字稚圭，勤学而无烛，邻舍有烛而不逮，衡乃穿壁引其光，以书映光而读之。」《西京杂记》旧题西汉刘歆所作，一般认为是东晋葛洪编辑整理的，记录了许多西汉的轶事。

The story is told in the Miscellaneous Records of the Western Capital: Kuang Heng loved to study but had no candle; his neighbour had candles but the light did not reach him, so Kuang Heng made a hole in the wall to let the light through and read his book by it. The book was traditionally attributed to Liu Xin of the Western Han, but is generally believed to have been compiled by Ge Hong of the Eastern Jin, and it records many anecdotes of the Western Han.

匡衡是真实的历史人物，靠着刻苦读书，尤其精通《诗经》，后来在汉元帝时做到了丞相。当时有「无说诗，匡鼎来」的说法，意思是大家不要随便讲《诗经》了，匡衡来了，可见他的学问有多么出名。

Kuang Heng was a real historical figure. Through hard study, and especially his mastery of the Book of Songs, he later became chancellor under Emperor Yuan of Han. People at the time had a saying that no one should lecture on the Book of Songs when Kuang Heng was coming, which shows how famous his learning was.
