Little Red Riding Hood was first written down by the French author Charles Perrault in 1697, but that original version had a dark ending — no one came to the rescue, and both Little Red Riding Hood and her grandmother were eaten by the wolf. It wasn't until 1812, when the German Brothers Grimm included it in their Children's and Household Tales, that a mother's warning not to leave the path was added, along with the now-famous ending where a passing woodcutter cuts open the wolf's belly to rescue them both — the reassuring version we all know today.
