The Enuma Elish is the Babylonian epic of creation, named after its first two words, which mean When on high. The poem is written on seven clay tablets found in the nineteenth century in the ruins of the library of Ashurbanipal at Nineveh, and it was first translated and published by the British scholar George Smith in 1876.

古巴比伦人每年春天过新年「阿基图节」时，会当众诵读这部史诗，祈求新的一年秩序安稳。马尔杜克是巴比伦城的守护神，著名的巴比伦伊什塔尔城门上，就有象征他的神兽「穆什胡什」的彩色浮雕，这座城门如今重建陈列在德国柏林的佩加蒙博物馆。

Every spring at their New Year festival, the Akitu, the Babylonians recited this epic aloud and prayed for order and peace in the year ahead. Marduk was the patron god of Babylon, and the famous Ishtar Gate of Babylon is decorated with glazed reliefs of his sacred beast, the mushhushshu. The gate has been rebuilt and is displayed in the Pergamon Museum in Berlin.
