《桃太郎》是日本最家喻户晓的民间故事之一。目前已知最早的印刷本出现在1723年，是一本小小的插图故事书；到了十八世纪，一种红封面的小画本"赤本"让它在江户时代的孩子们中间流行开来。早年流传的版本并不完全一样，直到1886年前后，"从桃子里出生"的讲法被写进了小学课本，才渐渐成为今天大家最熟悉的样子。

Momotaro is one of the best-known folktales in Japan. The earliest known printed version appeared in 1723 as a small illustrated storybook, and in the 18th century, little red-covered picture books called akahon made it popular among children of the Edo period. Early versions of the tale differed from one another; it was only around 1886, when the "born from a peach" version was included in elementary school textbooks, that it gradually became the version everyone knows today.

在日本，冈山县被认为是桃太郎的"故乡"。冈山一带流传着一个古老的传说：一位名叫吉备津彦的王子，曾在这里打败过作恶的鬼。故事里的"黍团子"（きびだんご）至今仍是冈山有名的传统点心，冈山车站前还立着桃太郎和伙伴们的铜像，欢迎来来往往的旅客。

In Japan, Okayama Prefecture is considered Momotaro's hometown. An old legend from the Okayama area tells of a prince named Kibitsuhiko who once defeated a wicked ogre there. The millet dumplings in the story, kibi dango, are still a famous traditional sweet of Okayama today, and in front of Okayama Station stands a bronze statue of Momotaro and his companions, welcoming travelers as they come and go.
