哪吒原本写作「那吒」，来自佛经，是佛教护法毗沙门天王的儿子，唐代译出的佛经里就已经有「那吒太子」。后来，毗沙门天王的形象和唐朝名将李靖融合，成了民间熟悉的「托塔天王李靖」，那吒也就成了李靖的三太子。到了明代小说《西游记》和《封神演义》里，名字才写成「哪吒」，陈塘关、闹东海这些情节也是在《封神演义》里定型的。

Nezha was originally written with a different first character and came from Buddhist scriptures, where he is a son of Vaisravana, a guardian king who protects the Buddhist teaching. Buddhist texts translated in the Tang dynasty already mention Prince Nazha. Later, the image of Vaisravana merged with Li Jing, a famous Tang general, becoming the well known Pagoda Bearing Heavenly King Li Jing, and Nezha became his third son. The name took its present written form in the Ming dynasty novels Journey to the West and Investiture of the Gods, and the episodes at Chentang Pass and the Eastern Sea took shape in Investiture of the Gods.
