哪吒莲花化身的故事出自明代小说《封神演义》，集中在第十二回到第十四回，第十四回的回目就叫《哪吒现莲花化身》。在这部小说里，哪吒是太乙真人的徒弟、陈塘关总兵李靖的第三个儿子。

The story of Nezha reborn from a lotus comes from the Ming dynasty novel Investiture of the Gods, mainly chapters twelve to fourteen; chapter fourteen is titled Nezha Appears in Lotus Form. In the novel, Nezha is the disciple of the immortal Taiyi Zhenren and the third son of Li Jing, the commander of Chentang Pass.

莲花在中国文化里象征清净和新生，太乙真人用莲花和莲藕为哪吒重塑身体，正是取了「出淤泥而不染」的寓意。所以后来许多年画、雕塑和动画里的哪吒，脚下都踩着莲花，身边还有风火轮和混天绫。

In Chinese culture the lotus stands for purity and new life, and Taiyi Zhenren used lotus flowers and roots to rebuild Nezha, drawing on the image of a flower that grows out of mud yet stays clean. That is why, in many later New Year pictures, sculptures and animations, Nezha stands on lotus flowers, with his wind fire wheels and red silk sash.
