女娲抟土造人的故事，原文出自东汉应劭的《风俗通义》：「俗说天地开辟，未有人民，女娲抟黄土作人。」原书这一篇早已失传，靠宋代类书《太平御览》引录才保存下来。西汉的《淮南子·览冥训》记的是女娲的另一件大事：「炼五色石以补苍天」。更早的《楚辞·天问》还问过一个有趣的问题：「女娲有体，孰制匠之？」意思是：女娲造了人，那女娲又是谁造的呢？

The story of Nuwa shaping people from clay comes from the Fengsu Tongyi, written by Ying Shao in the Eastern Han dynasty: when heaven and earth first parted, there were no people yet, so Nuwa kneaded yellow earth to make them. That chapter of the book was later lost and survives only because the Song dynasty encyclopedia Taiping Yulan quoted it. The Western Han book Huainanzi records another of her great deeds: melting stones of five colours to mend the sky. And the even older Heavenly Questions in the Chu Ci asks a fun question: Nuwa made people, but who made Nuwa?
