女娲补天最早的记载见于西汉的《淮南子·览冥训》：「往古之时，四极废，九州裂，天不兼覆，地不周载……于是女娲炼五色石以补苍天，断鳌足以立四极。」书里并没有说天为什么会破。

The earliest record of Nuwa mending the sky is in the Huainanzi of the Western Han: in ancient times the four pillars of the world collapsed and the land split apart, the sky no longer covered everything and the earth no longer held everything up, so Nuwa melted stones of five colours to mend the sky and cut off the legs of a giant turtle to stand as the four pillars. The book does not say why the sky broke.

把「共工怒触不周山」和「女娲补天」连成一个前因后果的故事，是唐代学者司马贞在《补史记·三皇本纪》里写的：共工与祝融交战失败，怒撞不周山，天柱折断，女娲这才炼石补天。我们今天熟悉的版本，就是这样慢慢拼接起来的。

Linking Gong Gong crashing into Mount Buzhou with Nuwa mending the sky into one story of cause and effect was the work of the Tang dynasty scholar Sima Zhen, in his supplement to the Records of the Grand Historian: Gong Gong fought Zhurong and lost, struck Mount Buzhou in fury and broke the pillar of heaven, and so Nuwa had to mend the sky. The version we know today was pieced together over time in this way.
