An ancient Chinese myth tells the story of Nüwa mending the sky, first recorded over two thousand years ago in the classic text Huainanzi. Legend says the water god Gonggong fought a great battle with the fire god Zhurong; after his defeat, Gonggong furiously rammed his head into Mount Buzhou, the pillar holding up the sky. The pillar snapped, the sky split open with a huge crack, and the human world was plunged into unprecedented disaster.
