Owl Babies was written by Northern Irish author Martin Waddell and illustrated by Patrick Benson, first published in 1992 by Walker Books in the UK. It tells the story of three baby owls — Sarah, Percy, and Bill — who wake up one night to find their owl mother gone. The more they think about it, the more frightened they become, huddling close together for comfort until she swoops back down from the night sky, and all their fear melts away at once. Martin Waddell later won the Hans Christian Andersen Medal in 2004, one of the highest honors in children's literature. The book is widely used to help children talk through the fear of a parent's absence, and is a beloved classic bedtime story in the English-speaking world.
