This story was written by the Spanish writer Luis Coloma (1851–1915). In 1894, Queen Maria Christina asked him to write a story for her eight-year-old son, King Alfonso XIII, who had just lost a tooth. The queen called her son Bubi at home, and Coloma put this pet name into the story. In 1911, it was printed as a book of its own for the first time.
In 2003, the City Council of Madrid put up a plaque at number 8, Calle del Arenal, saying that according to the story by Coloma, Perez the Mouse lived here. He became the first fictional character to be honored with a plaque in Madrid. Today, in Spain and many Latin American countries, children put a lost tooth under the pillow and wait for Perez to swap it for a little gift. In parts of Mexico and Peru, he is called the Tooth Mouse.
