普罗米修斯（Prometheus）的名字在希腊语里意为「先见之明」，他的弟弟厄庇墨透斯则意为「后知后觉」。盗火的故事最早见于古希腊诗人赫西俄德约公元前700年的《神谱》和《工作与时日》，诗中说火种被藏在一根空心的茴香秆里。地中海的大茴香，茎秆里是海绵状的髓心，能让火种长时间闷燃，古人真的拿它当天然火把。1818年，玛丽·雪莱的小说《弗兰肯斯坦》，副标题就叫《现代普罗米修斯》。

The name Prometheus means forethought in Greek, while his brother Epimetheus means afterthought. The fire story first appears in the poet Hesiod, in the Theogony and Works and Days, written around 700 BC, where the fire is hidden inside a hollow fennel stalk. The giant fennel of the Mediterranean has a spongy pith that lets embers smoulder for a long time, and people in ancient times really did use it as a natural torch. In 1818, Mary Shelley gave her novel Frankenstein the subtitle The Modern Prometheus.
