The best-known version of Puss in Boots comes from the French writer Charles Perrault, who published it in 1697 in his collection Tales of Mother Goose, whose original title was Stories or Tales from Past Times. The French title means Master Cat, or the Booted Cat. The same book also contains Little Red Riding Hood, Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella. Perrault ended every tale with rhyming verses giving its moral, and Puss in Boots has two of them.
Even before Perrault, stories of a clever cat who makes its master rich were told in Italy. In the middle of the 16th century, Straparola wrote in The Facetious Nights about a cat who helps a poor young man marry a princess, and a similar tale appears in The Pentamerone by Basile, published from 1634. The Brothers Grimm included Puss in Boots in the first edition of their Children and Household Tales in 1812, but because it came mainly from France, it was removed from the second edition onwards.
