The ancient Egyptians believed that every night the sun god Ra sailed through the twelve hours of the underworld. This journey was painted on royal tomb walls in a text called the Amduat, and the most complete early version is in the tomb of Thutmose III in the Valley of the Kings. The chaos serpent Apophis was the great enemy waiting along the way.

1954年，考古学家在吉萨大金字塔旁的密封坑里，发现了一艘拆开存放的雪松木大船，长约43米，属于法老胡夫，人们把它叫作「太阳船」。这艘四千五百多年前的古船经过修复，如今陈列在开罗的大埃及博物馆。

In 1954, archaeologists found a large cedar wood boat, stored in pieces in a sealed pit beside the Great Pyramid of Giza. About 43 metres long, it belonged to the pharaoh Khufu and is known as the solar boat. After restoration, this boat, more than four and a half thousand years old, is now displayed at the Grand Egyptian Museum in Cairo.
