Ragnarök是古诺尔斯语，字面意思是「众神的命运」；「诸神黄昏」则来自另一种写法Ragnarøkkr，意思是「众神的黄昏」，因德国作曲家瓦格纳1876年首演的歌剧《诸神的黄昏》而广为人知。这个故事主要靠冰岛保存下来：一是约1270年抄成的《皇家手抄本》里的长诗《女巫的预言》，二是冰岛学者斯诺里约1220年写成的《散文埃达》。

Ragnarok is an Old Norse word meaning the fate of the gods. The name Twilight of the Gods comes from another spelling, Ragnarokkr, and became famous through the German composer Richard Wagner, whose opera Twilight of the Gods premiered in 1876. The story survives mainly thanks to Iceland: in the poem The Prophecy of the Seeress, copied around 1270 in the Codex Regius manuscript, and in the Prose Edda, written by the Icelandic scholar Snorri Sturluson around 1220.
