This story comes from Sima Qians Records of the Grand Historian, a genuine historical record from over 2,300 years ago. The phrase planting a pole to establish trust later became a Chinese idiom, and remains one of the most frequently cited historical examples of integrity in Chinese culture today.

战国时期，秦国大臣商鞅准备推行新法令，却担心百姓不信任官府。他想出一个办法——在都城南门立起一根木头，看看到底会发生什么。

During the Warring States period, the Qin minister Shang Yang prepared to introduce new laws, worried the people would not trust the government. He devised a plan — setting up a wooden pole at the south gate of the capital, to see what would happen.
