Roughly 4,000 to 5,000 years ago, an ancient Chinese legend told of Shennong tasting a hundred herbs for his people. It's said that in his search for foods that could heal and nourish, he personally tasted every plant he could find, once encountering seventy-two poisonous plants in a single day — yet he never gave up.
Later generations recorded the knowledge Shennong gathered into a book called the Shennong Bencao Jing, one of the oldest surviving works on medicine in China. Even today, a great deal of herbal knowledge in traditional Chinese medicine can be traced back to this ancient legend.
