In Hindu mythology, Shiva is not only known as the god of meditation and asceticism, but also carries another widely recognized form — the "Lord of Dance," Nataraja. According to legend, Shiva performs an extraordinary dance across the cosmos called the Tandava, and the rhythm of this dance is said to govern the entire universe's cycle of creation, sustenance, dissolution, and rebirth.

In many sculptures and paintings, Shiva performing the Tandava is shown encircled by a ring of blazing flames. One hand holds a small drum, whose beat symbolizes the birth of the universe, while another hand cradles a flame, symbolizing the dissolution of the old to make space for the new. One foot is planted firmly on the ground, while the other is lifted lightly — a posture believed to represent liberation from attachment and forgetfulness.
