《一千零一夜》是阿拉伯世界的古老故事集，辛巴达七次航海的故事最初是一部单独流传的作品，18世纪初法国学者加朗翻译《一千零一夜》时，才把它编了进去，从此成为全书最有名的篇章之一。

The Thousand and One Nights is an old collection of stories from the Arab world. The seven voyages of Sinbad were at first a separate work; when the French scholar Antoine Galland translated the Nights in the early eighteenth century, he included them, and they became one of the best known parts of the collection.

「把大鱼误认成海岛」的情节，在世界各地的航海传说里都出现过。中世纪欧洲流传的《圣布伦丹航海记》里，修士们也在一座「小岛」上登陆生火，结果发现那是一条名叫贾斯科尼乌斯的大鱼。可见古代的水手们，常常把对大海的敬畏写进故事里。

The idea of a giant fish mistaken for an island appears in sea legends around the world. In the medieval European Voyage of Saint Brendan, monks land on a small island and light a fire, only to find it is a great fish called Jasconius. Sailors of long ago often wrote their awe of the ocean into their stories.
