The story of drilling wood for fire first appears in the chapter Five Vermin of the Han Feizi, written at the end of the Warring States period. It says that in ancient times people ate raw fruit and shellfish, which smelled foul and hurt their stomachs, so they often fell ill. Then a sage appeared who drilled wood to make fire and cooked away the foul smell. The people were delighted, made him their leader and called him Suiren. In the Han dynasty, one tradition counted Suiren, Fuxi and Shennong together as the Three Sovereigns.
The character sui originally meant a tool the ancients used to make fire. Later it also came to mean the warning smoke on border beacon towers, and the word fengsui, beacon fire, already appears in the chapter Orders of the Mozi. According to a commentary on the Book of the Later Han, smoke from burning wood by day was called sui and fire raised by night was called feng. When enemies approached, the beacon towers passed the signal from one to the next, carrying the news far away very quickly.
