素戋呜斩八岐大蛇的故事，同样记载在《古事记》和《日本书纪》里，故事发生在出云国，也就是今天日本岛根县的东部。有学者认为，八头八尾的大蛇形象，可能和当地常常泛滥、支流众多的斐伊川有关。

The story of Susanoo and the eight headed serpent is also recorded in the Kojiki and the Nihon Shoki. It takes place in the old province of Izumo, in the east of present-day Shimane Prefecture. Some scholars believe the image of a serpent with eight heads and eight tails may be linked to the Hii River there, which often flooded and has many branches.

故事里的宝剑「草薙剑」，又叫「天丛云剑」，是日本「三种神器」之一。相传这把剑供奉在名古屋的热田神宫，但从来不对外展示，谁也没有见过它真正的样子。出云地区至今仍保留着以八岐大蛇为题材的传统神乐表演。

The sword in the story, Kusanagi, also called Ame no Murakumo, is one of the Three Sacred Treasures of Japan. It is said to be kept at Atsuta Shrine in Nagoya, but it is never shown to the public, and no one has seen what it really looks like. The Izumo region still performs traditional kagura dances about the eight headed serpent.
