The Bremen Town Musicians is tale number 27 in the Grimm brothers' Children's and Household Tales. It was not in the first edition of 1812; it was added in the second edition of 1819. Scholars believe the Grimms shaped it from two folk tales told around Paderborn in Germany. Bremen is an old city on the Weser River in northern Germany. Today, together with the port city of Bremerhaven, it forms one of Germany's states.
The German title is Die Bremer Stadtmusikanten. Stadt means city and Musikant means musician. In the past, many German towns hired their own musicians to play at festivals, weddings and ceremonies, and that job was called town musician. Here is another fun fact: animal sounds in German are quite different from Chinese. A donkey says I-A, a dog says Wau wau, a cat says Miau, and a rooster says Kikeriki.
