牛郎星和织女星在中国最早出现在《诗经·小雅·大东》里：「跂彼织女」「睆彼牵牛」，那时还只是两颗星，并没有爱情故事。到了东汉的《古诗十九首·迢迢牵牛星》，才有了「盈盈一水间，脉脉不得语」的隔河相望。牛郎星就是天鹰座最亮的星，织女星是天琴座最亮的星，两颗星相距约16光年。2006年，七夕节被列入第一批国家级非物质文化遗产名录。

The Cowherd Star and the Weaver Star first appear in China in the Book of Songs, in the poem Dadong, where they are simply two stars with no love story at all. It was in the Eastern Han poem Far Away Is the Cowherd Star, one of the Nineteen Old Poems, that the two lovers began gazing at each other across the river of stars. The Cowherd Star is Altair, the brightest star in Aquila, and the Weaver Star is Vega, the brightest star in Lyra. They are about 16 light years apart. In 2006, the Qixi Festival was added to the first list of national intangible cultural heritage in China.
