《青蛙王子》是格林兄弟《儿童与家庭童话集》的第1篇，1812年第一版就排在最前面。它的德语原名是《青蛙国王，或铁亨利》（Der Froschkönig oder der eiserne Heinrich），故事最后出场的忠仆铁亨利，名字就写在标题里。在后来的版本中，它的开头变成了一句很有名的话：在很久很久以前，那时候许愿还管用。
The Frog Prince is tale number 1 in the Children and Household Tales of the Brothers Grimm, and it already stood first in the first edition of 1812. Its German title is The Frog King, or Iron Henry (Der Froschkönig oder der eiserne Heinrich), so the faithful servant who appears at the end is named right in the title. In later editions the story begins with a famous line: in olden times, when wishing still helped.
很多人以为是公主亲了青蛙，青蛙才变回王子，其实格林童话里并没有这一吻：原著里，公主气得把青蛙往墙上一摔，魔法才解除。「亲吻青蛙」的讲法，是后来的改编故事和电影里才流行起来的。民间故事研究者给这类故事的编号是ATU 440，我们的故事改用了一个更温和的结尾：公主遵守承诺三天，魔法就解除了。
Many people think the princess kisses the frog to turn him back into a prince, but there is no kiss in the Grimm story. In the original, the angry princess throws the frog against the wall, and that is what breaks the spell. The idea of kissing the frog became popular only later, in retellings and films. Folklorists classify this kind of tale as type ATU 440. Our story uses a gentler ending: the spell is broken after the princess keeps her promise for three days.
